Large print word search: free printables and how to choose one

A large print word search sets every letter big enough to read without squinting, ideally 18 point or more, with one roomy grid per page, a short word list and an answer key. Below are free ones to print tonight, and what to check so the print stays large.
Picture Thursday afternoon at your mom’s place. The puzzle page is folded on the arm of her chair with a pen clipped to it, and the word search is half done. She has moved the lamp twice. She holds the page out at arm’s length, pulls it close again, then sets it down. “They’ve made the letters smaller,” she says, and laughs, because they haven’t.
That small moment is the whole reason large print word searches exist. Eyes change, and the National Eye Institute calls it a normal part of aging: close-up focus usually gets harder after 45, and people start holding reading material farther away. The fix for a puzzle is simple. Make the letters bigger, give them room, and keep the page calm.
Below you will find what “large print” should mean, free puzzles to print tonight, and how to keep the print large once it leaves your printer.
What makes a word search large print?
No rule sets a size for puzzles, so “large print” on a cover is a description, not a guarantee. The closest thing to a standard comes from the American Council of the Blind. Its large print guidelines use 18 point Arial for ordinary text, black on off-white or cream paper, with a matte finish to cut glare.
We make word search books, so we measured our own free sheets against that line. The grid letters on every one are 19 point bold.
The word list sits just below the grid in slightly smaller bold type. Each sheet holds a single grid, so nothing is squeezed to fit.
1Letters you can read from the chair
Aim for 18 point or more in the grid. Bold helps, and so does a plain typeface like the Arial the ACB guidelines use.
2One puzzle per page
A full page for a single grid leaves wider gaps between letters, which makes it easier to keep your place along a row.
3A short word list
A list of a dozen or so words reads at a glance. Long lists in small type undo the large grid.
4Gentle directions
Words that run forward only, across and down, make the friendliest puzzle. Add diagonals for a little more challenge, and save backwards words for the puzzle lovers.
5Strong contrast
Dark letters on a light page, with no busy background art behind the grid.
6An answer key
Nobody should have to give up on the last word. A key on its own page keeps the puzzle clean.
Large print is not a small puzzle made bigger. It is a calmer page.

How do you keep the print large when you print it?
The most common reason a large print puzzle comes out small is the print dialog. Many printers default to Fit to page or Shrink to fit, which quietly scales everything down.
- Choose Actual size or 100 percent when the page is US Letter, which ours are.
- On A4 paper, Fit to page is fine. It shrinks a US Letter sheet only slightly, so our grid letters still land at about 18.5 point.
- Try the fingertip check. On our sheets, a capital letter in the grid stands about 5 millimeters (3/16 inch) tall. If yours looks clearly smaller, the printer shrank it.
- Use plain, matte paper in white or cream, as the ACB guidelines advise. Glossy photo paper throws glare.
Make the page easier on the eyes
Bigger letters are only half of it. The rest is the room around the page.

The National Eye Institute’s tips for living with low vision start with ordinary things: brighter lights at home, and a magnifying lens for reading and other close-up work.
If someone you love is struggling to see the page even with large print and good light, mention it to their eye doctor. Large print makes reading easier; it does not replace an eye exam. The same NEI page suggests asking an eye doctor about vision rehabilitation when vision loss gets in the way of daily life.
Solve one together
A large print word search is also easy to share. Two people can work one grid at the kitchen table, one reading the list aloud and the other hunting, and a grandchild can join in as an equal.

If you are wondering whether puzzles are good for the brain, we wrote an honest answer in are word searches good for your brain? In brief: a link, not proof, and company is worth having for its own sake. For a holiday table, our Thanksgiving table games include a word search race in mixed-age teams.
To make it personal, hide the people they love in the grid. Our large print word search with the grandkids’ names is made from the names you type, with big letters and words that run only across and down.
So, back to that chair on Thursday afternoon. The lamp is beside her now, the page came out of the printer at full size, and the letters are big and dark on cream paper. She finds the last word before you do.
Questions people ask
What size font is large print?
The American Council of the Blind's large print guidelines use 18 point Arial as the base size, with larger bold headings. No rule sets a size for puzzles, so check the letters themselves, not just the words large print on the cover.
Where can I find free large print word searches?
Our free large print word searches print at home on US Letter paper, each with the answer key on page two and no sign-up. There are holiday themes, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, and everyday themes, such as gardening, fishing and classic cars.
What is a good word search for seniors?
Look for big, bold letters, one puzzle per page, a word list short enough to read at a glance, and a theme the person enjoys. Gentler puzzles keep words running forward only, across and down, and every good puzzle includes an answer key.
Why does my large print word search print small?
Most often the printer is set to shrink the page, with a setting such as Fit to page or Shrink to fit. Choose Actual size or 100 percent. On A4 paper, a US Letter puzzle needs only a small reduction, so the letters stay close to full size.
